Chapter 2
“Nicely done.”
I whirl around to locate the speaker. It is a man. I’ve never seen him before.
“So?” Yeah, not my best moment of eloquence. The stranger’s mouth lifts slightly at the corners. Or it’s the light playing tricks with my poor eyesight, because this guy’s face looks like it hasn’t smiled in a long time. I don’t like this guy, I think to myself as I size him up.
He’s tall, probably a little over six feet. Young and well-muscled, with ash-blonde hair and dark gray eyes. Pretty cute, actually. He has a sort of…I don’t know, air about him. Like he’s dangerous. To a skinny girl who barely tops 5 feet, that sets off a lot of little red mind-flags.
“Nice to meet you, Krystal. Good to know you can do something useful.” Glad someone else thinks hacking is useful.
“Look, dude, I can’t go anywhere with you. I have a lot of things to do, you know, homework, cleaning my room, getting far away from tall, creepy guys who inexplicably know my name…” I say as I walk down the hall.
“Krystal, your name is on your bag.” I totally knew that.
“Oh…well, anyway, I gotta go. See ya!” Never again would be too soon, I think as I race down the hallway and out of the building.
The feeling is mutual, Krystal. I don’t like insolent kids very much. See you later.
That’s what I hear as I exit through the west side of the building. But…it’s kind of like I didn’t hear it. I just sort of…felt it. I realize that I’m sounding like a nutcase. I’m just low on nutrition. I really need to eat something I decide.
